"Strengthening the economic vitality of a region (jobs and income) is one of the primary reasons for investing in highway capacity. Elements of improving economic vitality include better access to markets and labor force, reduced cost of delay, reduced congestion, improved safety, reduced pollution, and a better quality of life. However, the ways in which new and improved highway capacity influences economic vitality are complex and often indirect. This project had three objectives: (1) to provide a resource to help determine the net changes in the economic systems of an area impacted by a transportation capacity investment; (2) to provide data and results from enough structured cases that project planners in the future can use the cases to demonstrate by analogy the likely impacts of a proposed project or group of projects (plan); and (3) to demonstrate how this fits into collaborative decision making for capacity expansion."--proj. desc. This project produced 100 case studies of already-built highway capacity projects and their economic development impacts. To accomplish this, the study team compiled pre/post economic and land development data and conducted local interviews, in order to portray the actual, observed economic development impacts of those projects. The results were put into a database and classified by type of project and local setting. An accompanying web tool, called T-PICS (Transportation Project Impact Case Studies), was developed to provide access to the case study information so it can be used to portray the range of economic development impacts occurring as a result of different types of projects in different settings.
The goal of this volume is to use the data from IEA's Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) to investigate significant questions related to mathematics and science education as well as a number of methodological issues. The authors of the papers included in this collection come from eleven of the TIMSS countries, and they are prominent in their respective fields. The book will be of interest to readers interested in comparative education, mathematics and science education, curriculum, and survey research methodology. A study such as TIMSS costs a great deal of money to carry out; and, if the true value of that investment is to be realized, much more research of the kind reported in this collection is needed. The papers included provide insights into the impact that TIMSS has had in the participating countries. They also serve as excellent examples of the kind of follow-up research that is needed.
This book deals with the emergence of nominal morphology from a cross-linguistic perspective and is closely related to Development of Verb Inflection in First Language Acquisition (ed. by D. Bittner, W. U. Dressler, M. Kilani-Schoch) both methodologically and theoretically. Each of the fourteen contributions studies the early development of the fundamental inflectionally expressed categories of the noun (number, case, gender) in one of the languages belonging to different morphological types (isolating, fusional-inflecting, agglutinating, root inflecting) and families (Germanic, Romance, Slavic/Baltic, Greek, Finnic, Turc, Semitic, Indian American). The analyses are based on parallel longitudinal observations of children in their second and early third year of life as well as their input. The focus lies on the transition from a pre-morphological to a proto-morphological stage in which grammatical oppositions and so-called "mini-paradigms" begin to develop. The point at which children start to discover the morphological structure of their language and the speed with which they develop inflectional distinctions of lexical items has been found to be dependent on the morphological richness of the input language on the paradigmatic as well as the syntagmatic axis of linguistic structure. The findings are interpreted within non-nativist theoretical frameworks (Natural Morphology, Usage-based theories).
